L.A. Lakers Will Pursue Carmelo Anthony And Lebron James In 2014

Lebron James and Carmelo Anthony will be courted by the Los Angeles Lakers.

The last great free agent frenzy was in 2010. With Dwayne Wade, Lebron James, Chris Bosh, Amar’e Stoudemire, Carlos Boozer, Joe Johnson, and much more. While I doubt there will be any offseason that rivals that one, the free agent class of 2014 could prove to be a big one.

Lebron James, Carmelo Anthony, Dwayne Wade, and Chris Bosh all have options that would make them free agents in the summer of 2014. While I personally believe that it will be unlikely that Dwayne Wade will do so, staying with the team that drafted him along with injuries will keep him from getting a bigger deal, I would bet my life savings that Carmelo Anthony will opt out.

This will be the last time that Melo can score a long-term, big money contract and he will¬†capitalize on that. While the Knicks will be able to offer him the most money, they will be strapped in their ability to acquire an additional superstar to play with Anthony for another year due to Stoudemire’s contract.

However, the Los Angeles Lakers will have significant cap space and thus will be able to court both of the players. While there is some speculation that the two would coordinate in order to land on the same team, I don’t buy it. They both occupy the same part of the floor and I don’t think Melo would be able to be selfless and take a step back to allow one of the greatest of all-time to take over.

Even though this is catching a lot of headlines and air time on ESPN, which is partially due to the lack of sports going on due to the All-Star break, I do not see the story. Wouldn’t any team with significant cap room go after superstars? These are the kinds of story that major media markets love because it sets the table for summer of 14 and the season preceding it. All season long there will be non-stop questioning and predictions from “experts”.

I can’t wait to go through another “The Decision” process and watch Hannah Storm ask the aggravating questions.
