The Rangers have been pretty successful over the past few years, considering last year they were a series win away from the finals and that they made the playoffs this year. While they were one of the favorite to win the cup at the beginning of they year, they did perform poorly relative to these expectations as they squeaked into the playoffs.
After being eliminated from the playoffs, ownership made adjustments to improve the team, one of which was firing John Totorella. This was a controversial move in that he had had success, but apparently had lost the pulse of the locker room.
Among the possible candidates to replace “Torts” was Ranger great Mark Messier, who was conflicted about joining the team in that role. Despite this, he had been widely expected to fill the role. That was until today.
Alain Vigneault will be the new head coach, but not officially as he is still under contract with the Canucks. However, his hiring will be almost immediately after he his formally fired by the Canucks.
